Trust funds surgery to save a pet who serves as a life line to an autistic boy

When the eight-month-old Beagle mix named Snoopy Doo first came into Dylan’s* life, there was the usual excitement and laughter that comes with any new pet. But the dog was something more than a companion to the young boy. He served as a powerful therapeutic conduit for Dylan who is autistic and had not spoken before the dog came into his life.

There is growing evidence that affirms what Dylan and his family have experience first-hand—pets can play an important role in helping adults and children grapple with a wide array of physical, mental, and emotional differences.

This spring, when a visitor came to the family home and left the backyard gate open, Snoopy Doo escaped and was hit by a car. The dog suffered severe injuries including multiple fractures that threatened his life.  Dylan’s mother, single and unemployed, couldn’t afford to pay for Snoopy Doo’s emergency care but was desperate to save this special pet who has made such a difference in her son’s life.

The Banfield Charitable Trust HOPE Funds helps pet owners like Dylan’s family cover veterinary medical expenses when they take their ailing pets to a Banfield Pet Hospital. Banfield Pet Hospital has a network of more than 750 hospitals across the country for BCT to funnel funds to in a way that ensures donations are being used efficiently. The Westchester, Ohio hospital was able to give Snoopy Doo the life-saving surgery and follow-up care he needed and keep Dylan’s inspiration for talking alive and strong. Snoopy Doo reunited with his best friend and family, and made a full recovery.

*Banfield Charitable Trust has changed the boy’s name to protect his privacy.
